There is obviouslly alot of support for those affected by Cancer. It is heartening that so many would like to support an event that would raise some funds for the various Cancer Charities. However charity events are difficult to organise, the usual logistics of when, where, how much should tickets be? Members of the site are spread far and wide around Ireland. How many would turn up. I did think a charity auction via Ebay, with donated items may be an option, however this is also very time consumming & not guaranteed to raise much. However I do think there is an easier option via the site ... I propose to write to admin and ask if a temporary option could be added to the "extras" . Via this I would propose a "Light a Candle" ... using the Paypal or Credit Card payment facility members could donate any amount they want to "Light a Candle". I would propose that "Light a Candle" is available from 1st December 2009 to 6th January 2010. Members organising "meet & greets" or parties over the Christmas period may also like to organise a whip-round of the revellers. Any money raised would be split equally between Cancer Research Ireland & The Irish Hospice Assocation.
Great idea Alan. It is amazing the amount of replies to this thread and the amount of reads too. Hopefully admin will go for you idea so members can make a small difference and maybe help hospitals afford even one extra drug treatment.
I have been in touch with Admin & they are in theory in support of a 1 off appeal... as this is after all a swing site & not a charity site ... after the weekend I hope to have something in place & ready to go live by 1 Dec 2009. so remember Give a little & help save a Life
keep an eye out for "the Jingle Balls & Naughty Angels" details to follow in a few days
:welcome:OK the appeal has started, please see the Jingle balls & naughty Angels thread for details... :bounce:
Levels of cancer are shown to be higher in certain areas of the country Information gathered by the National Cancer Registry for its first 'Atlas of Cancer' due to be published today shows the emergence of geographical differences. The study examined common cancers over a 10-year period and found that areas that are more densely populated consistently have a higher risk of the disease than areas with less people For example it found a higher incidence for all malignant forms of the disease around Dublin and Cork Regions with more agricultural workers have a lower risk of the disease The report also reveals a higher than average incidence of bowel cancer in Cork city while the incidence of lung cancer is highest in Leinster The variations do not mean a particular location itself caused the cancer but instead are likely to reflect socio-economic differences in the population, exposure to risk factors and uptake of cancer screening.
Great thread. Its a very hard time of year for people who lost family or friends to Cancer, its always hard but christmas time is especially tough, for some a very lonely time of year.
A big thank you to all that supported this campaign, in particuliar I would like to thank admin for all their help & assistance. Even though this Christmas campaign is over, it is still possible to donate directly to many of the Irish Charities offering support, help & assistence to cancer patients and their families. Thanks.
Thank you Alan for all the work you put into Jingle balls and naughty angels. Hopefully the money that was raised will help someone in need. Well done Alan:thrilled::clap:
Thank you Alan its folk like you that make this world such a nicer place.......................xxxxxxxxxxxanny
This thread and what Alan did is wonderful, and all the members who gave generously.. Cancer is a horrible horrible disease, it leaves the suffer feeling powerless, scared and at times very much alone.. Very often family and friends find it extremely difficult to know exactly what to say to the person with Cancer, so thank you Andy for including the name of the support group, there are many similar both North and South, and many survive simply on cash donations, so any small ammount helps.
Cancer ...
remember you can sponsor Today FM's Ray D'arcy to raise money for this worthy cause.
Today FM's Shave Or Dye
Today FM’s Shave or Dye will see its presenters shaving their heads or dyeing their hair to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. Today FM is calling on you to sponsor its presenters to Shave or Dye, or join them by taking part in your own Shave or Dye fundraising event. This year up to 30,000 people living in Ireland will be diagnosed with cancer. The funds raised will go towards cancer patient care services and cancer research.

remember we all know someone ... friend, collegue or family that has been affected...every euro you give helps ...
hi alan-ball Has there been a total figure given on the amount raised by the good folk of s4i ?

hi alan-ball
Has there been a total figure given on the amount raised by the good folk of s4i ?

a total of 246 euro was raised ... Disappointing considering the promised support by the members of S4I ... a membership of 60,000 ,with this & the charity having a high number of reads & replies. If all that read the thread donated then at least 1000 could have been raised.
Anymay whats charity got to do with Swinging?
A big thanks to admin & those that dug deep in their pockets and did make a donation.
Omg that is a very low amount, ok it is a swing site but most people will be affected by cancer in their life. Excuse me if i sound nasty but if god forbid to was to happen to anyone who couldn't be bothered to donate, they would most likely be the first ones looking for a handout, either financially or other means of support. Raises the question for me....do they deserve to benefit from other peoples good nature when they couldn't even donate 2 euro?????
cancer is the most demoralising disese i have ever come accross at 6pm tonight i saw my brother in law pass a man of only 37yrs and married for only 2yrs to my sister it is horrible it took that mans dignity
