I watched a great programme tonight about the lives of young people in Ireland and the issues they faced around their sexuality..
What struck me was the fact that even though this is 2010, people still feel it is acceptable to use offensive terms such as faggot ect ...
Gay, straight, Bi, hetro ,assexual, trans ect...this is who and what we are, just as we are male, female, transdgendered ect... Black , white, yellow ect ect....
All of these young people have my respect for going public and bringing their fight for equality and acceptance to light, and words such as faggot should be made feckin illegal!!!!!!!
I watched the program & applaud the young people, their parents and friends.
I hope that as a parent I would be as understanding (as those parents) if any of my children came home & told me they were Gay/Bi/Trans ...
does being different change the child I have always loved ... I think I would love them more as they have choosen a hard road to follow & they will need all the love, help, understanding & support they can get.
Sadly even in todays day and age some people can not accept anyone who is not straight or differnt in any way. I admire any one who comes out to their family, but it is not something i could do as my mother is too old fashioned and it would not be worth the hell she would give me.
the term foggot stems from the word "fag" which was used by public school boys in england to describe a younger boy who did menial tasks for older boys or prefects. the next time you hear this ask them what does that mean, then correct them. when you insult someones ignorance thats usually enough. REMEMBER sticks and bricks.
