learn a new word every day...todays word SNARK
Snark : A smart ass remark made by wanna be hipsters who think they cloak their douche baggery in a self important sense of fey cleverness and ironic witticism
The use of sarcasm or malice in speech, text mail or in chatrooms to deliberatly be little another person.
Biting, cruel humor or wit, commonly used to verbally attack someone or something.
I didn't know there was a word for it but the above definitions would seem to suitably describe the use of offensive remarks or mails on this site.
of course this is not to be confused with slagging, at which we irish are past masters and which in other countries may indeed by described as snarking. the difference between snarking & slagging in the Irish social scene is that slagging is normally between friends & aquaintances and accepted in the spirit in which it was meant & it is hopefully never purposely hurtful.
Remarks such as "your a big girl, put a wide angle lens on your camera"
is not slagging ... ever ... even if you know the person very well.
I have seen it done on a few sites Alan, and it can cause a lot of offense , thanks didn't know what the term for it was, but as the old saying goes, sarcasm is always the lowest form of with...
GK.....the rest of that oscar wilde quote is "...but the highest form of humour."
T-bags random fact No. 241......there is no word in Chinese for sarcasm.
Ah, I had to look it up lol. No seriously, I'm with Oscar on this one, but then I am a sarcastic bastard.....I don't do jokes well, I'm not really a "funny man", but I do have a fairly quick brain and a well tuned sense of the ridiculous, so sarcasm is generally my first port of call. Yes, sometimes people take offense, but as far as I'm concerned that's their problem.
Oh yeah, I was abed about 10 mins after I spoke to you, but it was cold and empty (like my fridge lol).
This would seem the most appropriate thread to make my post in, up until today I always have enjoyed the banter and craic on forums, and for the most part tried to avoid the nastiness that has crept in from some quaters..
But I am tired of people with little else to do ,other than make cutting comments, based on nothing only a dislike or grievence with other members, swing is supposed to be a community, not a damn playground!
If you haven't the courage to tell another member exactly what your problem is with them, without resorting to sarcasm and snarking, then don't comment at all, and don't drag others into it, without them knowing the whole story!if there even is one.
Now I resorted to SNARKING myself today, and it has left a bad taste in my mouth, but I have asked admin for my comments to be removed, and won't be posting in anything goes again..
Goodluck to all who keep the FUN going..
ahhhh offally, nooo, I really like your posts...damn whoever it was that incited these feelings, damn them all, the swine!
Newbie and Alan-Ball I missed a word I wont be posting SNARKS in forums again;)
Alan your right Snarking isn't pleasant, neither as a taker or a giver, so a lesson learned for me today, now as Padds says feck off and enjoy yourself, the forums will be safe until you come back:grin::grin:
Hi decided to refresh this older thread. It's perfect for I'm about to say. Just came across new and nervous post. I believe forum for " new and nervous" is designed to welcome new comers, help integrate, give advise etc. But sometimes it's a place where "older more experienced " members simply take a piss using news like a target practise. I'm quite new myself, still learning how to navigate in this world but I read a lot in forums about respect and good manners does it apply to new members only?
thanks lovebird, obviously it wasn't,t me who was a target of a joke but like u said new member, sometimes bit scared, shy, if being subjected to such cruel treatment might simply run from a site. I'm not saying it happened on this occasion but if we don't stop it when it starts it may become a tolerated norm.
We will not go out of our way to be rude to anyone here but if you get our backs up we will bite back but there is a line we wont cross, after all we are all here to have fun either chatting or meeting, not to snark or anything else. It`s just a few stupid little:wank: who can make it a nasty place to be.
Well said Lovebird and Raven, sites will always have their share of little people with nothing else to do only cause problems for others.
Petty jealousies, rumours based on second hand gossip, blatant lies to cause trouble amongst friends, and downright nastiness at times..
But as LB says, do as you would in real life, ignore the trouble makers and get on with enjoying the fun a swing site can provide.
