If I remember rightly the thread that was removed was a similar thread something like the academy awards, ie. the best this and that. I think the reasoning at the time was it might cause upset to anyone who did not get a mention. However if this thread goes ahead, I personally could see no harm in it, because if you do not get a vote does'nt mean you are not popular as there are thousands on this site but only a few venture into the forums.
