The 'X' signifies that the profile has the 'eXtras' pack in use - usually paid for by the profile user but sometimes a 'freebie' on new sign-ups.
eXtras pack gives
- 5 cams to view instead of only 2 in the chatrooms;
- profile highlighted in search listings [orangey coloured background];
- tools to tweak your photos;
- shows the last 5 new people who perved your profile were.

I dropped a bit of a b****ck with the same query....i was in a chatroom and was wondering the same thing....i asked if they were cross dressers..DOH!
On symbols, though, what does the little flame symbol mean on some of the folder icons in the forums?
